Collegiate Killing, Shannon Crawley and Jermeir Stroud

Denita Smith
In season two, Collegiate Killing is about the murder of Denita Smith by Shannon Crawley in the state of North Carolina. The love story of Jermeir Stroud and Denita Smith does not end well for Denita Smith. Jermeir had previously dated Shannon, who did not handle his rejection well. He had not been serious about her and when he proposed to Denita, it pushed her over the edge. She futher tried to destroy him by insisting it was him who had committed the murder and produced tape recordings that were alleged to be him threatening her, however they sounded nothing like his voice.

Shannon Crawley was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole and is not eligible for release.

Her appeal includes (see link):
At approximately 8:10 a.m. on 4 January 2007, Michael Hedgepeth, the maintenance director for the Campus Crossings Apartments in Durham (“Campus Crossings”), heard a shot fired and saw a woman running from the back to the front of the 1100 building of the complex. Mr. Hedgepeth testified that the woman's route was an unusual one because there was a more convenient exit to the parking lot. As Mr. Hedgepeth drove toward the 1100 building, he saw a young woman, possibly the same woman as before, driving away from the building in a burgundy SUV. Mr. Hedgepeth testified the young woman was hysterical about the gunshot; she told him it was because she was afraid of guns. The young woman told Mr. Hedgepeth she stayed at the 1200 building, so he told her to go wait for him there while he called the police.

Mr. Hedgepeth saw the young woman in the SUV once more in the parking lot of Campus Crossings while he was on the phone with police but did not see her after that. Police arrived at Campus Crossings in response to Mr. Hedgepeth's 911 call, but they left without filing a report because they were unable to ascertain the source of the gunshot.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. that morning, Corey Smith, a Campus Crossings resident, was coming out of his apartment to go to work when he saw someone's belongings scattered down the staircase. At first, he thought someone did not make it up the stairs for some reason, but at the bottom of the stairs, he discovered a body. After seeing that the body was not breathing, Mr. Smith called 911 on his cell phone. Based on instructions from the 911 operator, he checked a purse on the stairs for identification and found out it was the body of Denita Smith, a Campus Crossings resident and student pursuing a master's degree at North Carolina Central University. Mr. Smith then went to the clubhouse at Campus Crossings to notify Mr. Hedgepeth.

This episode is described as A popular grad student, Denita Smith is found at the bottom of her stairs, murdered with a bullet hole in the back of her head.

Take Away

While Denita Smith is dead, and Shannon Crawley is serving life without, there are lessons here for anyone willing to it a thought. With some men there are women they will marry and women they will only ever have sex with. Avoid men like this since they have zero issues using another human being for sexual release since they frequently will make false promises in order to have sex. They are insincere, despite being charismatic. Shannon still has "crazy eyes" to this day, and should probably consider changing her name.

  1. I think the cop killed the young college lady.

    1. He definitely seems less than innocent to me, as well.

    2. The officer did not pull the trigger: however, he is at the root of the murder. Smith is better of dead than starting a family with this piece of trash. The judge acknowledged the same!!! Ladies BEWARE!!!! Stay away from this lover BOY!!!

    3. amen to that! jermeir is a no good bastard that got denita killed because he couldn't keep it in his pants. i had the feeling that denita was too good for him. people that get their significant others killed because of their actions make me sick. if you don't know, look up the stories of avis banks and rhoni reuter, two pregnant women that were murdered because their cheating men were messing with women who were nutcases.

  2. Me too. If he didn't, he manipulated and coerced the young lady to do it and take the rap.

    1. Shannon lost her mind over a cheating piece of ass. Stroud didn't kill Denita, he was the cause of it but Shannon was the one who pulled the trigger because cheating ass Stroud chose Denita over her. Jealously is what caused her to lose her mind and she didn't take the rejection well. She wasn't coerced into doing anything by him except sleeping with him which she willingly did. She's definitely not as innocent or vulnerable as she tried to make out.

  3. Agree. And after the murder and trial, he quickly moved on and married someone else.

  4. This police officer spits in God’s face offending Him by having sexual relationships with people to whom he is not married allowing Satan to take advantage of the weakness of all concerned leading to Smith’s demise by Crawley (she has two kids and could be desperate for love and financial security). Remember, like God uses people to do His perfect will, Satan uses people to do his evil will. The officer and Crawley fell for the tricks/wiles of the devil (Ephesians Chapter 6 verses 10-17) leading to Smith’s demise.

Frankly speaking, death for anyone that is a Christian is a good thing (Ecclesiastes...your day of death is better than the day you are born). Smith has been blessed not to be able to marry this officer; he is trash and the marriage would NOT have lasted. Follow his life today and I bet you will fine DRAMA!!! I bet he never apologized to Crawley’s family for the damaged he caused. READERS BEWARE!!!

24/7 Satan is planning your demise to ruin your life and conquer your soul. Stay away from this officer 👮🏿; he is a product of the devil’s loins looking for sex rather than love.

    1. If you damning the officer, you might as well damn both women to, because it was both of them, unmarried, having sex with him as well. At the end of the day, I don't care how much promises he made, when she made up her mind to kill that young lady, it was ALL on her.

    2. Absolutely correct! She murdered Denita herself. It amazes me that she can lie without flinching. She is guilty as sin!

    3. There is not one human being on this earth that is sin less. Stop judging people sweetheart. God loves us all. He dislikes our actions. Let he or she who is sinless cast the first stone.

    4. I did not pass judgement or condemn one person; only the simpleminded that after reading my comments would made such an ignorant statement. Again, I PASSED JUDGEMENT ON NO ONE NOR CONDEMN ANYONE!!! I just simply told the truth...PERIOD!!!

    5. I understand, Lincoln. Facts are facts. You merely stated the facts. Stating facts is not passing judgment.

    1. No he didn't. Shannon did this all by herself. Stroud's behaviour and rejection of Shannon was the catalyst that caused her to kill Denita so in that respect he certainly doesn't get a free pass. God help the poor woman who married him, he's probably cheated on her too.

  6. Shannon definitely has mental issues and is guilty. She couldn’t take being rejected by Jermeir. He treated her badly but she’s definitely not the first to have this happen & others haven’t committed murder. Denita was totally innocent. Shannon is where she belongs.

    1. I totally agree. Jermeir was scum and low down; but Shannon was cray cray and didn't like being rejected. It's an age old story--man engaged or heavily involved with a lady; but fools around with another. Shannon, everybody plays the fool sometimes. Get over it and move on. Instead, she got so caught up thinking if Denita was out the way, he would come running to her. But, just like he cheated with you, he would cheat on you. Again, he was low down, messing over women; but I highly doubt he had anything to do with killing Denita. It was all Shannon and she's right where she should be.

    2. i don't what these women be thinking when they decide to kill the gf's/wives/fiancee's of these men. if i was going to kill anyone, it would be the MAN, not his woman. better yet, don't kill anyone but do whatever it takes to move on with your life instead. like you said, we've all been played, been hurt but killing isn't the answer. hell, if i killed every man that hurt me or one of his loved ones, i'd be on death row! lol.but it's never been that critical to me.

    3. Its hard for me to understand how a woman who is not even married to a man thinks she owns him and is willing to kill another woman to be with a man who doesn't even want her. She is right where she belongs and that phony tape recording is just ridiculous. Her parents are stupid as well for believing her. Jermier might be a cad, but he didn't stoop so low as to kill Denita.

    4. Her mom especially is still in some deep denial about her daughter's guilt. She claims she knows her daughter and that she would never murder anyone especially over a man. Well she got that well and truly wrong. I think she cannot begin to comprehend her daughter doing something as heinous as murder so denies it to the very depths of her soul. I think deep down though, her dad knows she did it. Shannon seems to be extremely manipulative.

  7. Did you all actually pay attention to the case?? Their affair had ended a year prior. She lied and claimed this dude raped her with a knife while he was at work. She lied about him calling and threatening her life. He was at work when she murdered that woman. He was wrong for cheating but he had nothing to do with the murder. That girl is psychotic along with her idiotic family repeating all of those lies. Contrary to what most believe, women can be malicious, psychotic and vengeful. That's why they get away with most everything they do. Some of these comments are dumber than she and her family are.

  8. Case I agree totally with you. I can’t believe these narrow minded bloggers watched the same show. Shannon is a cold blooded murderer who loved this man more than herself and her children. She knew full well that she was just a BOOTY CALL. This man did not hide his life from her. She is a fool and she is where she belongs.

  9. I’m curious about what she did with the gun? The maintenance man saw her running but he didn’t mention seeing a gun. I guess she could have stuck it in her pocket or something? Just had me wondering.

  12. Idc what the show says regarding his whereabouts. The police department lies and fakes evidence all the time. I believe Jermeir drove / rode with Shannon to kill Denita. He probably hid inside Denita's apartment. Ayone ever look inside? How did Shannon even know where Denita lived? It's also funny how he has a kid almost as old as the case. He isn't as innocent as he's pretending to be. He used Shannon and set her up to kill Denita. One thing that stood out to me was that Shannon never seemed angry at all about Denita so the motive doesn't appear valid. I believe he was involved for sure.

    1. He may be a womanizer but that doesn't make him a murderer. I don't believe Jermeir was involved in is fiancee's murder. That doesn't make sense. Shannon was someone with whom he was cheating. That was it. He had no real feelings for Shannon. Seems like his relationship with Shannon may have been more on the physical but he didn't see her as someone he would marry. I don't know how honest he was with Shannon about his relationship with Denita. Men..... Shannon was his side-piece and she, unfortunately, allowed him to use her that way b/c he probably lied to her about his feelings or she thought he loved her. She probably pleased him in bed but he didn't see her as someone he would want to marry. Durham is not that big. Not difficult to find someone, if you're looking. That was a mess and very sad. That innocent woman (his fiancee) was murdered by a woman who felt rejected b/c of his infidelity but, that doesn't give Shannon the right to take Denita's life. Why kill the woman? If anything, take it out on him. He was cheating on Denita and she probably had no idea.

  16. I went through major depression, twice now. First the case of Lisa Renee and then Denita Smith.. Why why?? It has been too long and I still get goose bumps when I think about them...I never knew them, I only read their cases and usually have hard time sleeping when I think about such menace and evil behind egocentric men.....
